Video: See What's New in Microsoft SharePoint Workspace 2010 (Formerly Microsoft Office Groove)

Watch this video, providing insight into SharePoint Workspace 2010 (new version of Office Groove):

See What's New in Microsoft SharePoint Workspace 2010 (Formerly Microsoft Office Groove)

SharePoint Workspace 2010 provides important new key features:

· SharePoint Workspace:  A new workspace type that allows you to setup a synchronization relationship with all of the supported lists and libraries from a SharePoint site.  The workspace contains site content available for you to read and edit while you are offline, and will automatically synchronize with SharePoint when you’re back online.  New lists and libraries will automatically appear in the workspace when they are created (or customized) from SharePoint.  You can take all of your favorite SharePoint sites with library/list content with you when you’re on the go.

· SharePoint Document Library Support: SharePoint Workspaces support the common SharePoint document library variants, and provide enhanced capabilities directly within the client, like: check-in and check-out, multiple content types including folders, drag and drop for document creation and organization including from Outlook or Windows Explorer, version history, and metadata/property support.  Within these libraries, Microsoft Office documents gain all sorts of new capabilities including co-authoring, automatic merging, differential sync, and more.

· SharePoint List Support: SharePoint Workspaces can contain most standard SharePoint list types, including Discussion, Announcements, Links, and custom lists.  Form previewing and editing is provided through Microsoft InfoPath 2010 technology.

· Virtual Lists through Business Connectivity Services (BCS):  Pull down and work with your content from LOB applications or other external sources.

· Views:  Both public and private views of lists and libraries are supported.

· Read & Unread, and Alert Customization: You will be notified when content changes or there are new additions to a SharePoint site that you are synchronizing through unread icons and our notification UI.  These notifications can be customized to adapt to your information needs, on a per-workspace or list/library basis.

· Content Selection: Select individual libraries or lists for synchronization.  Easy one-click setup directly from the default SharePoint browser UI.  Recommended sites are shown during workspace creation, including those published by your SharePoint administrator.

· Broad Connectivity:  Our synchronization with SharePoint supports numerous connectivity options, including Windows domain authentication, Forms-Based authentication, SSL configurations, and Alternative Access Mappings - for internal, extranet, and Internet scenarios.

· Ribbon:  Office 2007 pioneered this new way of working within your application, and we’ve adopted it as well.  It has been designed to optimize our key scenarios while ensuring consistency across cross-product scenarios.

· Office Backstage: This new feature of Office 2010 provides a new view to increase the discoverability and usability for the contextual work that happens beyond the workspace.

· Cutting-Edge Collaborative Authoring:  SharePoint Workspaces support seamless collaborative authoring sessions for Word and PowerPoint documents that are hosted in SharePoint document libraries.

· Instantly Find Documents, Lists, Attachments, and More:  Your local documents and lists are easier to find and organize than ever before.  Workspaces are automatically indexed and available through the familiar Windows Search user interface.

· Access Workspace Documents Directly from Office Applications: Offline documents can be opened or saved from Office applications through integration with the Windows Explorer.  Navigate local folders like they were part of your Windows drive.

· New Contact Card with Integrated Presence:  Office Communicator streamlines communication by allowing you to utilize its capabilities within the SharePoint Workspace application.  Communicator presence is displayed directly in the Groove workspace member pane.

· Standard Office Features:  We included numerous other features that are consistent with Office 2010 applications like:  a 64-bit native client; support for IPv6 networking; Single Sign-On authentication; new language support including full IME, mirroring, and complex scripts; native integration with standard management tools like Active Directory; continuous help publishing through Office Online; and much more.

PowerPoint Web App’s New Reading-Optimized View

The Problem

The problem is simple and every user of PowerPoint has faced it at least once:

Read a PowerPoint presentation in Normal View or watch it as a Slide Show?

If you read it in the Normal view, you will see the notes but it will be missing animation and rich media.

If you choose the Slide Show, you’ll see animation and transitions, but miss the slide notes. In addition, complex slide animations are often unintelligible unless viewed in the full screen Slide Show.

The Solution

In order to solve this, PowerPoint Web App’s default view preserves animations and allows the viewing of slide notes. So the PowerPoint Web App’s default view is a new reading-optimized view, with the following components:

  • Quick access to the Edit and Slide Show views

  • A resizable window – with Silverlight installed the presentation will automatically resize to fit the window dimensions

  • Slide transitions, object and text animation, live in the browser. Animation timings honor their original settings, and animations set to advance on click work just as you’d expect

  • Additional controls to allow faster “browsing” and locating slides within the deck

  • A notes pane

Welcome SQL Azure

SQL-Azure_rgbMicrosoft has rebranded the SQL Services that make part of the Azure platform.

Effective immediately, SQL Services will be called Microsoft SQL Azure, and SQL Data Services will be Microsoft SQL Azure Database.

Confused? Well, in order to make sure that everything is understood correctly:

Microsoft SQL Azure is a building block of the Azure platform, delivering on the Microsoft Data Platform vision of extending the SQL Server capabilities to the cloud as web-based services, enabling you to store structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data. Microsoft SQL Azure will deliver a rich set of integrated services that enable you to perform relational queries, search, reporting, analytics, integration and synchronize data with mobile users, remote offices and business partners. More information about Microsoft SQL Azure is available on Microsoft.com.

Microsoft SQL Azure Database, a component of the SQL Azure “platform”, is a cloud-based relational database platform built on SQL Server technologies. With SQL Azure Database, you can easily provision and deploy relational database solutions to the cloud, and take advantage of a globally distributed data center that provides enterprise-class availability, scalability, and security with the benefits of built-in data protection, self-healing and disaster recovery. More information about Microsoft SQL Azure Database is available on Microsoft.com.

Microsoft is expected to release a Community Technology Preview (CTP) of SQL Azure Database very soon, at the Worldwide Partners Conference 2009 (WPC09), July 13-16 in New Orleans.

Stay tuned to this blog for more information about SQL Azure, WPC, Microsoft Technologies and more.

Introducing the Google Chrome OS

Hot off the press:

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Do you think Windows has just got a serious competitor?

Download: Microsoft IT Environment Health Scanner

Microsoft has released a new diagnostic tool for network:

The Microsoft IT Environment Health Scanner is a diagnostic tool that is designed for administrators of small or medium-sized networks (recommended up to 20 servers and up to 500 client computers) who want to assess the overall health of their network infrastructure. The tool identifies common problems that can prevent your network environment from functioning properly as well as problems that can interfere with infrastructure upgrades, deployments, and migration.
When run from a computer with the proper network access, the tool takes a few minutes to scan your IT environment, perform more than 100 separate checks, and collect and analyze information about the following:

  • Configuration of sites and subnets in Active Directory
  • Replication of Active Directory, the file system, and SYSVOL shared folders
  • Name resolution by the Domain Name System (DNS)
  • Configuration of the network adapters of all domain controllers, DNS servers, and e-mail servers running Microsoft Exchange Server
  • Health of the domain controllers
  • Configuration of the Network Time Protocol (NTP) for all domain controllers

If a problem is found, the tool describes the problem, indicates the severity, and links you to guidance at the Microsoft Web site (such as a Knowledge Base article) to help you resolve the problem. You can save or print a report for later review. The tool does not change anything on your computer or your network.

The Microsoft IT Environment Health Scanner can be downloaded here.

Post-SP2 updates for SharePoint 2007 released

Microsoft has released the bi-monthly (June ‘09) Cumulative Updates for MOSS and WSS3.0.

Fixes for MOSS

Notes: An “uber-package” for MOSS has not been released yet. Either install all MOSS fixes or wait for the single-install package. “Language specific” fixes have to be installed for each language installed on your system.

KB972569 Global
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;972569
Issues resolved: In Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, you start an out-of-the-box approval workflow and set a due date. As soon as the due date passes, you edit the workflow and then delete the due date. Immediately a task overdue e-mail is sent out to the approvers with the original due date. The approvers continue to receive a task overdue e-mail (referencing the original due date) weekly until the workflow is canceled, a future due date is set or the workflow is approved.

KB970948 Global
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;970948

Issues resolved:

  • When you try to a create a Key performance indicator (KPI) item by using the "Indicator Using data in Excel Workbook" option and the Excel workbook has Unicode characters, you receive a "File not found" error message.
  • When you click a link to a Report Center Dashboard page in your My Site page, you receive the following error message:  An unexpected error has occurred.
  • When you use the spelling checker on words that do not include accented characters, the spelling checker does not suggest corrected words to include the accented characters. For example, you use the spelling checker to check the spelling of "telefono" in Spanish, and it results in no suggestions. The correct suggestion should be "teléfono" to include the accented "é."
  • If you enable binary large object caching on a site collection intermittently you receive "File not found" errors when you open already cached files during the BLOBCache automatic background cleanup procedure. After you install this update, the probability of "File not found" errors caused by this race condition is minimal.
  • If you copy some text into a Rich Text Edit control in Internet Explorer 8, click Save as in the File menu, and then click Cancel, you find that the text is pushed down the page.
  • After you install this update, you can use the RichTextEditorShortcutEnabled property to control all rich text edit boxes. This includesthe AboutMe rich text edit box in My Site. For example:

stsadm.exe -o setproperty -url http://portal/MySiteURL -pn "richtexteditorshortcutenabled" -pv "no"

  • A federated search location can be configured to use "Common Cookie Authentication." However when this location is used on a site through the Federated Search Results Web part, the Web part is not shown.

  • You use UserA account to create a page and then click Check In to Share Draft. Then, you delete the UserA account. After that, if you change to the All Draft Documents in the Manage Content and Structure page, you receive the following error message:  Unknown Error

  • A search alert is added to inform you of any new results for a particular query term. However, after crawling a content source that contains many changed or new documents by using that query term, you find that the resulting alert e-mail only contains results for 10 of these newly crawled documents. You are never notified of the other document

KB970947 Language specific

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;970947

Issues resolved: Consider the following scenario:

  • You copy text that contains smart tags from a document that is created in Microsoft Office Word 2007 or an earlier version of Word.

  • You paste the text into a Content Editor Web part in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

  • You use the Remove Inline Styles feature to remove the inline styles.

In this scenario, the text that is associated with the smart tags is removed

KB972562 Language specific

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;972562

Issues resolved: In a slide library, you have a slide that contains more than two commas in the file name. When you click Copy Slide to Presentation, PowerPoint 2007 does not start. Additionally, there is no error message.

KB972564 Forms Server Global

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;972564

Issues resolved:  Consider the following scenario.

  • You use Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

  • You design an InfoPath form that contains an ordinary rich text control and a read-only rich text control. The controls are linked to the same data source.

  • You enter text that represents a URL to the ordinary control. The read-only control is updated with the same content.

  • You open the form by using SharePoint, and notice that the URL in the read-only control is also hyperlinked.

  • You click the link in the read-only control.

In this scenario, the Web page that the URL points to is open in the control instead of in a new Internet Explorer window.

Note This problem does not occur in the ordinary control.

Fixes for WSS

Notes: no information about the actual fixes has been released yet

Microsoft Hohm – Save energy and money with the new beta

Microsoft is launching a new free online application that helps people save energy and money through better understanding of home energy usage.

Microsoft Hohm will provide recommendations to users, in order to conserve energy.

Hohm is based on the Windows Azure cloud operating system.

For those wondering what Hohm means, it is pun of “Ohm” and “Home”; Ohm (Ω) is defined as “the resistance between two points of a conductor when a constant potential difference of 1 volt, applied to these points, produces in the conductor a current of 1 ampere, the conductor not being the seat of any electromotive force” (source: Wikipedia).

In order to use the application, you have to register for the beta at http://www.microsoft-hohm.com/.

Last-minute design changes to Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2

Aiming at enhancing the quality and robustness of the round-the-corner final release of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft has done some changes related to RDP7, the new version of the Remote Desktop protocol.

Remote Desktop will eventually use host resources for DirectX 10.1 / DXGI 1.1 and Direct 2D applications, taking into advantage the enhanced bitmap acceleration capabilities in R2. Pre-release versions of Window 7 used client resources to render these types of applications.

GDI applications, media with Windows Media Player, and Aero Glass will continue using the client-side rendering for remote scenarios.

Even though this design change may impact the utilization of CPU and GPU resources on the host side for certain use cases, it provides a consistent approach to remoting multiple types of rich (2D and 3D) content across a broad range of rich and thin client devices.

Excel/OneNote 2010 will support simultaneous editing

Office 2010 Web Applications - Excel 2010As we are preparing for the Technical Preview of Office 2010, additional information has started emerging from various sources.

One of the most interesting scenarios of the new Office 2010 is the ability to simultaneously edit Excel 2010 or OneNote 2010 files along with your colleagues.

This feature is not actually new for OneNote, since OneNote 2003 / 2007 provides the “Shared Session” feature that lets teams of (as many as you like) people access a shared set of notes at the same time by automatically synchronizing everyone's changes to the notebook.

It is not yet clear if simultaneous editing in Office 201o will be implemented in the same way; sure is that Google Docs provides this feature for a long time, allowing up to ten people to work on the same document.

Word 2010 will not support simultaneous editing; even though we don’t know why, I am sure a lot of people will be disappointed to find out about this since such a collaborative scenario would be a killer feature for Office 2010.

Don’t forget that you can still apply for Office 2010 Beta. Find more information here.

FCS update re-offering problem resolved

HomeIt seems like the WSUS team continues to face problems publishing updates.

This time, an update released for Forefront Client Security installed successfully without issues but afterwards another FCS update of previous version (1.0.1703.0) would be offered to the client. If the Client Update for Microsoft Forefront Client Security (1.0.1703.0) package attempted to install, it would fail as there would already be a later version of the FCS Antimalware engine on the system.

Consequently, the KB971026 update would be continually offered and continually fail to install.

Microsoft has re-released the (older) Client Update for Microsoft Forefront Client Security (1.0.1703.0) package. WSUS Administrators should sync their servers to get the updated metadata.

The issue did not affect home users running Forefront Client Security as part of an enterprise benefit, since Microsoft Update did not seem to face the problem (or was very quickly fixed).
